Partido de la U clashes with Senator who used Twitter during meeting

by Adriaan Alsema July 23, 2009

Colombia news - Armando Benedetti

Coalition party Partido de la U want to punish Senator Armando
Benedetti for leaking information from inside a party meeting through
Twitter, the Senator said Thursday.

The Senator had his Blackberry on him and was reporting from inside the meeting, apparently without the knowledge of his colleagues.

While the party was discussing increasing tensions within the coalition, Benedetti was sharing what was said with those following him on the microblogging network.

According to the Senator, Party president Luis Carlos Restrepo reprimanded him after some of members of the Partido de la U had expressed they were bothered about what had happened.

The senator, through Twitter, says to feel censured by his own party and assured he never wanted to cause problems.

“There was no confidentiality. I just transcribed a press conference. What happened is that I got to the media first on here,” Benedetti wrote.
