Panama will not extradite ex-director of DAS

Panama will not extradite the ex-director of Colombian intelligence agency DAS who was officially charged with conspiracy amongst other crimes, said Panamanian president.

“Maria del Pilar will stay in Panama because she has territorial asylum and we will stand by that. Panama is a country that respects liberties and to whom it has given asylum, stays here,” President Ricardo Martinelli said to a Panamanian daily paper.

Hurtado was charged by the Prosecutor General Viviane Morales for her role in the illegal wiretapping of oppositionpoliticians, journalists, supreme court judges and human rights workers.

To the Prosecutor General’s Office the severity of the crimes, and Hurtado’s asylum request demonstrate that she has no intention of taking part in the judicial process and for these reasons a detainment measure and arrest warrant were issued to Hurtado.
