Organizers say referendum is subject to slander

by Adriaan Alsema April 7, 2009

Colombia news - Luis Guillermo Giraldo

Jailed DMG director David Murcia is forming a group to discredit the
referendum seeking the re-election of Colombian President Álvaro Uribe,
the referendum’s organizers say.

According to Luis Guillermo Giraldo, spokesman of the Committee that organized the 2008 referendum, Murcia is conspiring with followers to discredit to the popular vote.

“After they announced that some of DMG want to withdraw their signatures from the referendum they go as far as form a committee against the referendum, but little by little it will show that what they want is harm the president,” Giraldo told newspaper El Espectador.

The referendum organizers are being investigated by the Electoral Council, the Senate and the Prosecution for allegedly allowing suspected money launderer DMG to sponsor the logistics of the referendum. The organizing committee also has not been able to show who financed the immense campaign.
