Only one arrest in FARC-politics case

Colombia’s Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos is surprised that,
exactly one year after finding the computers of FARC commander Raúl
Reyes, only one person has been arrested for alleged ties to the
guerrillas.

According to the government, the computers contained a wealth of evidence against Colombian politicians, journalists and members of NGOs that have ties to the FARC and publicly denounced the existence of FARC-politics.

But so far, the Supreme Court has only found enough evidence on the computers to arrest one suspect; Director of an agricultural NGO, Liliany Patricia Obando Villota, who the government accused of being Raúl Reyes’ lover. Obando has not been indicted yet.

Santos, surprised about the low number of arrests, thought more people would have been in jail by now, because of the amount of information on the slain guerrilla leader’s computers.

“I am surprised with the delay in these investigations. We hope that these allies of the FARC will go to jail,” the Minister said Sunday.
