Liberal Party councillor killed, another injured in southwest Colombia attacks

A Liberal Party councillor is killed and another critically injured in two separate attacks in southwest Colombia, reported local media Sunday.

Jesús Narváez, a councillor in the San Sebastian municipality in the Cauca department, was killed with machetes, knives and stones while driving on his motorcycle Saturday.

The killing was followed by the shooting of Jorge Enrique Becoche, a councillor in Cauca’s northern Caldono municipality, while playing bingo in the town. He is in critical care in a clinic in the department of Cali.

Police have no leads in either case.

San Sebastian council president Marino Sotelo Salamanca asked the departmental and national government for better protection of political leaders.
