Octogenarian jailed for murder of Canadian

Colombian Francisco “Francisquito” Javier Ospino Polo, who is 80 years old, is sentenced to 48 years in prison for the murder of Canadian citizen John Patrick Haid in a botched robbery attempt, reports El Heraldo.

The investigation revealed that on February 10, 2009, Polo approached Haid at gunpoint in the driveway of the family home of Haid’s girlfriend.

A relative noticed Polo and screamed, at which point Polo shot Haid.

Haid died a few minutes later, as the bullet hit him in the heart.

The prosecutor argued that Polo has consistently been a burden on society, saying that “since he has been an adult, he has not engaged in anything other than crime.”

In his decision, the judge ruled that Polo receive 440 months for aggravated homicide, 84 for possession of illegal firearms, and 52 for attempted aggravated robbery, which adds up to around 48 years.

The defendant’s lawyer said that he was planning on appealing the decision to a higher court in Barranquilla.
