OAS to continue monitoring peace process

by Adriaan Alsema December 31, 2008

The OAS will continue to monitor the peace process between the
Colombian government and paramilitary organization AUC until 2010, said
Sergio Caramagna, delegate of the OAS in Colombia.

Caramagna, who monitored the peace process for the Inter-American organization described the preliminary results of the demobilization process that started in 2003 as positive.

Over the years, 31,000 members of the AUC demobilized. Despite the fact not all blocs of the paramilitaries demobilized and some officially demobilized paramilitaries are still active or formed new groups like the Águilas Negras (Black Eagles), the OAS delegate praised paramillitarism has been “delegitimized” in Colombia.
