OAS demands FARC release all hostages

The Organization of American States (OAS) backs the Colombian government in its position to only agree to peace talks with the FARC if the rebels release all hostages, OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza said.

Insulza was in Bogota to meet with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos who recently said doors to peace talks are open on the condition that the FARC release all hostages and cease terrorist activities.

“I share the position of President Santos on the FARC, but of that we know only he speaks; we know that in any case, a previous requirement is the liberation of all hostages; those decisions are objective conditions that can open roads for progress; and more than mediations, it is necessary to meet those conditions,” the OAS official said following the meeting.
