Beauty queens in western Colombian have nobly stepped aside and canceled their contest in aid of flood victims.
Organizers of the Queens of the Coffee Region beauty pageant in Riseralda department think money from company sponsors would be better spent helping hundreds of people affected by very heavy rains across Colombia.
The director of the parade, Juan Albreto Tangarife, says the queens want to support their people and will help in anyway they can, according to local media. The committee who elects Miss Risaralda, and also participates in the National Beauty Pageant in Cartagena, has been asked to help raise funds.
The governor of Risaraldo agrees and says there are bigger priorities than the parade and money raised should go to the community.
There will be two free events in June and November, where the queens will ask anyone attending to bring aid for the victims.
