Colombia’s government is releasing a social map of the country on Monday night highlighting the amount spent on social investments in each part of the country, to pinpoint the areas of greatest need.The social map will provide information on all social projects undertaken in over 1000 municipalities of Colombia.
The map is drawn from information contributed by 500 Colombian companies, 100 foundations and the public sector on social matters throughout the country.
Colombia’s El Tiempo newspaper reported that the lack of a social map has led to private “social responsibility” resources are wasted. Now, authorities and private investors will be able to see which areas need the most help.
Gabriel Vallejo, director of the DPS, told Caracol Radio that the tool would be available for free online and would allow people to study a number of social indicators of different municipalities, including health, education, security, demography, nutrition, economics, and culture among others.
“What we are looking for is to optimize the resources that the public and private sectors spend on social issues and to impact with greater accuracy the places which need support in specific areas,” he said.
The social map was developed in partnership between the Department for Social Prosperity (DPS), the Development Bank of Latin America, the Andean Promotion Corporation (CAF), and Microsoft.
