Bolivar elects new governor

Partido de la U claims victory in the election of a new governor of the Bolivar department, with 87,900 votes.

Alberto Bernal, the new governor, said Sunday night “I am very grateful to God, to Cartagena and the political movements and unions that supported me”, according to newspaper El Heraldo.

Former Governor Joaco Berrio Villarreal left office following accusations that he mishandled resources, triggering an election.

According to reports from the Election Registry, 90% of the population in the department did not go to the polls.
