Almost 100 candidates banned from Congress elections

The president of Colombia’s National Election Council, Marco Emiliano Hincapie, announced on Monday that nearly 100 candidates in various congressional elections have had their registration to run for office canceled.

The candidates were registered to run in the March 14 elections for the country’s Senate or House of Representatives, but were removed from competition because they have a criminal record, discipllinary measures against them or even pending lawsuits about child support.

Hincapie also announced that some political parties backing now-disqualified candidates voluntarily removed the politicians ahead of government investigations into the matter, so as not to lose their quota of allotted candidates.
