Colombian Navy admiral arrested for suspected ties with drug cartel

Admiral Gabriel Arango Bacci has been under investigation since August 2007.Arango Bacci, who headed the navy’s Caribbean fleet at the time, was fired over accusations that traffickers for the Norte del Valle cartel and drug gangs from the Caribbean coast paid him for information on the movements of drug patrols off Colombia’s Caribbean coast. He has always claimed to be the victim of a conspiracy.An official in Colombia’s prosecutor’s office told The Associated Press that prosecutors would also question two other high-ranking admirals, including the navy’s No. 2, about the case. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give information about the case.Arango Bacci voluntarily surrendered to authorities after his arrest was warranted.
