Intelligence official’s lawyer resigns due to threats

The lawyer for a former DAS official who has been implicated in the illegal wiretapping of government opponents resigns due to threats, reported W Radio Tuesday.

Ulises Duran stepped down from defending Jose Miguel Naravaez, former deputy director of the Colombia’s intelligence agency, on January 14. He has represented Narvaez since he was charged in 2009.

Duran will be succeeded by Adriana Maria Posso, who would not give details of the threats that led her colleague to abandon his role. She did say that if the threats were true, it would not be safe for her to represent Narvaez.

Narvaez was charged in July 2009 for his role in the illegal wiretapping of government opponents.

Illegal spying on government opponents caused a major scandal in Colombia. Several of Uribe’s closest aides and DAS directors are under criminal investigation and the DAS is in the process of being dismantled.
