Murders of women stack up in south Colombia

Multiple women are reported murdered in various violent incidents in the Valle del Cauca department, including at least one minor, local media reported Thursday.

Reports conflict over details including the number of deaths and the names of the victims.

Both newspaper El Tiempo and the Caracol Radio website report the death of one minor, a 17-year-old girl from Buenaventura, who was sexually violated and assassinated by an attacker that broke into her residence.

According to Caracol, a second minor living in the same residence was brutally murdered in the same incident. The El Tiempo report says that the second girl was badly injured, but does not indicate that she was killed.

The two sources also cite continued concern in the area over the disappearance of the young environmentalist Sandra Cuellar, who went missing in the middle of February.

In addition, Caracol Radio reports the death of popular singer Gloria Estella Collazos Huertas, who left her house to attend an art show and was found dead in a rural zone between Palmira and El Cerrito, northeast of Cali, a week later.

The El Tiempo report does not mention this death, but states that the body of the lawyer Paula Andrea Salazar Davila was found wrapped in plastic, also in rural El Cerrito. Beside her was the body of a young man.

El Tiempo further reports that the cadaver of another young woman, whose body was found on the route between Yumbo, just north of Cali, and Palmira, remains in the Palmira morgue.
