Murcia says he paid US$2 million for re-election referendum

David Murcia, director of suspected money launderer DMG, says he paid
close to 2 million dollars to fund the logistics of the referendum
about the re-election of Colombian President Álvaro Uribe.

In an interview with weekly Cambio, the jailed DMG director said that his company primarily financed the recollection of signatures.

“We did the transportation of the signatures, which cost a lot of money because it had to be done nationwide. We had to use planes, helicopters, armored transport, etc.,”Murcia told the magazine.

“I also approved some resources to buy shirts, caps and some of the paperwork they needed,” he added.

Murcia refuses to say who he made the deal with to support the campaignm claiming it would jeopardize the security of his family.

The opposition Liberal Party asked Colombia’s prison authorities to allow Murcia to be allowed to leave jail, so he could be heard about his alleged support for the re-election campaign by the Senate.
