The woman who admitted killing her baby after first saying the boy had
been kidnapped was indicted Wednesday and has to await trial behind
bars.
Before the judge, the Johana Andrea Marcias denied guilt to first degree murder. Her defense lawyer asked the Court not to send the woman to jail, because her life would be at risk there.
The confession Wednesday that Esteban Alejandro never had been kidnapped, but that Marcias herself had killed her baby, led to a wave of indignation throughout Colombia and mostly in the Santander department where the woman is from.
Police needed to protect the family home from angry neighbors who wanted to tear it down and the suspect needed to be taken to court under heavy police protection and wearing a bullet proof vest to keep her from being lynched by an angry group of people.
The father of the baby is considered innocent, but also receives police protection. He is with family waiting for the remains of his week-year-old baby to be handed to him for a Christian burial.
