Mortar attack kills 3, injures 4 soldiers

A mortar attack on a military battalion in the north-Colombian department of La Guajira killed at least three soldiers and injured four.

The attack took place in the Distraccion municipality in the south of the department, some 15 miles from the Venezuelan border.

According to preliminary media reports, the mortar was fired while the soldiers were doing chores.

The army is expected to release a press statement with more information about the attack.

Several illegal armed groups are active in the department.
