Mockus open to 2nd round alliance

Green Party presidential candidate Antanas Mockus says that he would not rule out an alliance with another political party if he goes through to a second round runoff election.

“If party X wants to support our candidacy, welcome, if citizens want to join party X, well then welcome; good relations need to be maintained with the leaders of all the parties,” Mockus said.

Colombian media are reporting that Mockus wants an alliance with Polo Democratico candidate Gustavo Petro, despite the fact that the Green Party candidate has previously ruled out such a move.

“[Petro] seems to me to be a good candidate, who focuses on the issue of inequality, an issue we have in common, in terms of the fight against illegality and regional mafia,” were Mockus’ exact words on the matter.

Colombia goes to the polls on May 30. If none of the candidates wins more than 50% of the vote, which is needed to assume the presidency outright, the two most voted-for candidates will face one another in a second round election.
