Interior minister backs Santos re-election

Colombia’s Minister of the Interior German Vargas Lleras, himself a former presidential candidate, spoke out Wednesday in support of the possible re-election of President Juan Manuel Santos.

The minister made the statements in relation to a proposal by the Polo Democratico party to amend the Colombian constitution in such a way that would eliminate the president’s eligibility for re-election.

Vargas Lleras said, “I see no reason to limit the possibility that Juan Manuel Santos could be re-elected, nor the necessity that he must decide so far in advance on the issue of re-election.”

When questioned over whether he would like to see Juan Manuel Santos as Colombia’s head of state for another four years, the minister for the interior simply replied, “yes.”
