Millonarios win 2nd Copa CAFAM

Bogotá football club Millonarios have won the second edition of the
Copa CAFAM, beating league champions América de Cali on penalty after a
0-0 final score.

‘Millos’ dominated in the first half but real chances were hardly ever created. After the break, the home side had more difficulties breaking through América’s defense.

The visitors seemed to wait for sudden opportunities to score a goal as they lacked creativity to put pressure on their opponents.

América had a penalty denied near full time as Cassiera handled the ball in the box, but the referee judged the incident to have been unintentional and waved play on.

As such, penalties were needed to decide whether América would keep the trophy after winning it last year, or whether Millonarios would earn their first cup in quite a while.

Both sides scored their first two penalties but América’s Paulo Cesar Arango then had his attempt parried by substitute goalkeeper José Cuadrado. Millonarios newcomer Carlos Marinelli then made it 2-3, followed by Pedro Tavima hitting the post.

Carmelo Valencia, who joined Millonarios from Atlético Nacional this year, netted the winning penalty to keep the trophy in Bogotá.
