Colombia’s Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) said Thursday that there was a strong possibility of seeing the “El Niño” weather phenomenon this summer.

IDEAM, part of Colombia’s Environment and Sustainable Development Industry responsible for “vigilance of the national climatic system,” said in a Thursday press conference that the chance of seeing “El Niño” has “notably grown” for the late sumer months.

The “El Niño” weather phenomenon not only raises temperatures across the globe, but primarily is characterized by the warming of the ocean around the pacific coast of South America. This weather condition — opposite of the cooling “La Niña” — could lead to fluctuations in droughts, floods, crop yields, etc.

“This special [notification] is so that the mayors, governors and regional autonomous corporations of the country, can attend to this announcement and begin their plans of prevention and continuously consult the bulletins emitted by the Institute,” said Omar Torres, director of IDEAM.
