Medellin judge suspended over house arrest scandal

Judicial authorities have suspended a Medellin judge after he allowed a convicted drug gang chief to leave maximum security and see out his sentence under house arrest.

Judge Humberto Navales Durango ruled last week that Alirio de Jesus Rendon, alias “El Cebollero,” should be placed under house arrest due to alleged health issues.

An investigation was launched after President Juan Manuel Santos criticized the decision over the weekend.

Navales will be suspended from duty for three months.

Authorities will also investigate two legal medics and one medic from health organization Caprecom who assessed El Cebollero.
