Medellín beat Nacional in local derby

by Adriaan Alsema September 22, 2008

Independiente Medellín beat Atlético Nacional Sunday in the last of this weekend’s Copa Mustang classic derbies. The ‘reds’ left the field with two goals, the ‘greens’ with only one. Tolima still lead the tournament with 19 points.

Marínez put DIM in the lead in the third minute of the second half and Pérez further silenced the home crowd, netting for 0-2 in the 72nd minute.

The tension returned as Galvan got one back for Nacional three minutes later, but the side that won both Copa Mustang editions in 2007 failed to find the equaliser.

Junior Barranquilla maintained their second place with a 1-0 win over Envigado FC. The only goal of the match was scored by Hernández in the 18th minute.

Once Caldas missed their chance to move into fourth place as the side from Manizales drew at Deportivo Pereira. Medina had in fact put the home side ahead on the hour mark but Once Caldas at least secured a point thanks to an equaliser from Mena twelve minutes later.

Atlético Bucaramanga couldn’t score at Cúcuta Deportivo, who secured what is only their fifth point of the season. Cúcuta remain in last position at five points from their nearest rivals. Bucaramanga are placed six and have a good chance of making it to the next round.

Boyaca Chicó, champions of this year’s Copa Mustang 1, are on their way up and need to climb only one more spot to enter the top eight. Against Deportes Quindío on Sunday, Caneo scored the only goal to earn his side a narrow but valuable win.

Deportivo Pasto and La Equidad held each other to a goalless draw that helped neither. Pasto are 14th and La Equidad 17th. They both have ten points, but Pasto’s goal record is slightly less negative.
