Medellin beat arch rivals Nacional to reconquer top spot

by Jonathan Roorda April 16, 2010

Independiente Medellin reconquered their first place in the Colombian Liga Postobon with a 2-1 win over arch rivals Atletico Nacional on Thursday.

Nacional scored the opening goal at Medellin’s Atanasio Girardot stadium, with Giovanni Moreno beating the opposing keeper in the 18th minute.

But Edison Gimenez levelled four minutes after the break, and Nelson Barahona made the stadium shake on its foundation with a 91st-minute winner.

DIM played most of the second half a man down as Juan Ortiz was sent off in the 52nd minute. Nacional’s Andres Orozco followed late on.

Medellin are now one point ahead of Deportes Tolima with five games to go. The top four is completed by Santa Fe and Real Cartagena.
