Medellin and Junior make no mistakes in Copa Mustang

by Jonathan Roorda December 7, 2009

Nothing is decided yet in Group A of the Copa Mustang group phase as both Independiente Medellin and Atletico Junior won their matches on Sunday.

Sunday’s action started with the match between favorites Medellin and visiting side Real Cartagena, and the hosts needed 35 minutes for star striker Jackson Martinez to open the scoring.

The forward was again the one to score with ten minutes to go, this time converting a penalty for a 2-0 final result.

Junior needed a win at Pereira to keep their candidacy for the final alive, but conceded a goal from Jhon Jairo Charria in the 32nd minute.

Teofilo Gutierrez equalised six minutes later though and Carlos Bacca netted the winning goal in the 73rd minute.

Pereira had Anselmo de Almeida sent off with four minutes left.

Medellin have ten points from four games, and Junior follow with eight points. Cartagena (3) and Pereira (1) are no longer in contention.
