Independiente Medellín and América de Cali have qualified for the final
of the 2008 Copa Mustang II. Medellín held local rivals Nacional to a
goalless draw and América beat Deportivo Cali to secure their top spot.
Group A
All Medellín needed to happen was for them to collect more points today than Deportes Tolima would do at La Equidad in Bogotá.
As DIM and Atlético Nacional failed to score, Tolima did have a chance to close in on the group leaders but instead lost 3-1 at El Campín.
Carpintero scored the opening goal on 28 minutes and Córdoba then doubled La Equidad’s lead in the 40th. An own goal from Soto gave the visitors new hope but the side from Ibagué failed to get another. Instead, Argentinian Diego Cochas added a third for the home side in added time.
Medellín now have 11 points from 5 games, four points more than Tolima. La Equidad and Nacional each have four points.
Group B
América de Cali were the stronger side against Deportivo Cali and scored the only goal of the match through Ramos, who converted a penalty after 21 minutes.
Deportivo Pereira could have made sure that only match day 6 would point out which side is to qualify, but Higuita’s men crashed to a hopeless 3-0 defeat at Junior in Barranquilla.
Gutierres netted the opening goal after 16 minutes, an own goal from Pulgarin made it two in the 25th and Yanez added a third in minute 63.
With one match day to go, América have 11 points and are four points ahead of Junior. Pereira follow at another point and Cali are last with four points.
