Mayor kidnapped in southwest Colombia

A group of armed men kidnapped the mayor of a town in the southwest department of Cauca, local media reported Tuesday.

According to local authorities, the mayor of Almaguer, a town in the south of the department was captured while traveling with two friends between the towns of San Sebastian and Santa Rosa. The group of 10 kidnappers, who have yet to be identified, allegedly set up a road block in order to stop the mayor’s vehicle.

The governor of Cauca, Guillermo Alberto Gonzalez, said that he is concerned about the identities of the men who kidnapped the mayor because they might belong to an armed organization that is in the process of restructuring.

Members of the police and army started a search for the mayor.
