100 Years of Solitude by Colombia’s most legendary writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez on Tuesday was listed in an Italian literary poll as impossible to finish.
Among the likes of James Joyce and Thomas Mann, Marquez’ novel was voted “impossible” to finish by 100 readers of the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera” via social networking sites.
One reader defined the novel as “a soap opera” while another praised Marquez’ ability “to make something new.” Another reader claimed he had “started the book twice” and despite being “voracious” to novels such as 100 Years of Solitude, they could not finish it.
“After exceeding the initial mess of similar names and very long sentences, it’s wonderful … it all depends on the way in which we are about to start a book,” exclaimed one reader over Facebook.
The story has been translated into 37 languages and to date has sold more than 20 million copies world-wide, despite been labeled by some Italian readers as impossible to finish the novel did not reach the top 10.
