Arrest in Facebook teen prostitution case

by Camilla Pease-Watkin June 23, 2010

A man was arrested in the northern Colombian city of Bucaramanga on Tuesday for luring underage girls into prostitution using social networking website Facebook, reports Colombian media.

Reports state that the man was using the pseudonym Monica Gomez to befriend girls below the age of eighteen, before offering them false work as escorts.

On gaining the private contact details of the minors he would ask them to send him photographs and videos of themselves.

The man would then groom the minors for prostitution with his clients, and if they refused he would blackmail them using the videos that they had sent.

The man was arrested by police after he arranged to meet with a girl to whom he had offered escort work for $75 (COP150,000) an hour. The two met in the city centre and from there the man had planned to take the minor to a hotel.

Authorities say that the man has been charged with using media to obtain or offer sex with a minor.
