Lozano sends letter to FARC to negotiate hostages

by Adriaan Alsema June 24, 2008

“We sent a message, a letter with some ideas, some reflections and some initiatives, seeking a way to draw up a proposal for a humanitarian agreement,” said the journalist.

The initiators are still awaiting a response. The letter was sent to FARC-head ‘Alfonso Cano’ days ago,but the rebels’ secretariat still hasn’t responded. “This way of communicating is very slow. It’s difficult to reach them, because there’s likely to be military operations going on where he is,” Lozano said.

after it opened direct communication with ‘Alfonso Cano’, but still not known any response, given the distrust that exists in the body guerrillero,  agregó Lozano.

After being authorized by President Alvaro Uribe, Lozano and former minister Alvaro Leyva agreed to establish contacts with the new chief subversive, to try a communication that allows advance the search for a humanitarian agreement.

The FARC must also be very distrustful to open channels of communication, because the “public exposure” of Raúl Reyes, number two of the guerrillas and their spokesman made him vulnerable in the rebels’ eyes and contributed to his death, early March.

“We need to work very patiently and prudently,” Lozano added.

According to the Voz-director all communication efforts with the FARC are in accordance with friendly countries France, Spain and Switzerland.
