Local election candidates assassinated in southwest Colombia

Two Liberal Party candidates for the city council of a town in the southwest of Colombia were assassinated Sunday.

According to Caracol Radio, the two were shot dead while meeting in a house in Valle del Guamuez, a town 15 miles north of the Ecuadorean border.

One of the victims is Brandon Bustamente, a local musician who reportedly was set to publish a book about the violence in the town where he was murdered.

Bogota-based Radio Santa Fe said the FARC is suspected of the murders, while news website Terra reported that family members said the victims had received no death threats before being killed.

Authorities reportedly have started an investigation into the double homicide.

Local and departmental elections will be held throughout Colombia in October.
