Local election candidate disappears in south Colombia

A mayoral candidate from the south-Colombian municipality of Puerto Asis has briefly been held by an armed group, reported Caracol Radio Saturday.

According to the radio station, the Conservative Party candidate Jorge Coral Rivas disappeared Saturday sparking fears he was kidnapped.

Coral, a former mayor of Puerto Asis, reappeared a few hours after his disappearance claiming he had been held by armed men.

Candidates for the local elections held on October 30 have been the target of criminal and insurgent groups across Colombia. So far, more than 20 have been killed.
