Liberal leaders lured with promise of government positions

Liberal senator Juan Fernando Christo complained that members of his party have been called by Partido de la U delegates in attempts to lure their support in exchange for promised bureaucratic positions in the new government.

Nearly all liberal MPs have been victims of “telephone and personal harassment” by people led by current campaign frontrunner, Juan Manuel Santos, Christo told Caracol Radio.

Partido de la U campaign manager, Rodrigo Rivera, would pick up the phone with a “list of liberal leaders in hand to offer them jobs in government in exchange for campaign support,” said Christo.

“It is no secret that the calls have not been to propose or discuss ideas, but have been to coax liberal leaders into politicking for the Partidode la U,” added Christo.

Angelino Garzon, vice presedential running-mate of Juan Manuel Santos, responded by saying that his campaign was “not based on personal grievances” and stated that the “Partido de la U aims to make a grand alliance of various sectors.”

Mr Garzon did not state if the phone calls were part of the process to form the party’s planned “grand alliance.”
