Betancourt’s husband demands book rights

The estranged husband of Ingrid Betancourt requested the freezing of the French-Colombian politician’s assets, and wants the royalties from her new book to be included in their divorce settlement.

Juan Carlos Lecompte’s lawyer request applies to items  the former presidential candidate released Tuesday. This procedure is “authorized by law, and common in almost all divorces,” according to Lecompte’s lawyer.

Betancourt filed for divorce at the beginning of 2009 and has since then submitted a petition for the full rights to her book. The court will now need to respond to her request within the next fifteen days. If the judge rules in favor of the petition, Betancourt will not have to give up the book royalties.
