Opposition party member assassinated

Another member of Colombia’s Polo Democratico Alternativo party has been assassinated, reported Polo Democratico on Wednesday.

According to the party, Miler Avendaño is the 12th member of Polo Democratico to be assassinated in the last six months.

The murder happened in Los Cedros, a town in the north Colombian Santander department, and was allegedly committed by a criminal group.

President of the Polo Democratico, Clara Lopez Obregon, condemned the crime and expressed her solidarity and condolence to the family of Avendaño Peñaranda. She further demanded that Colombia’s President, Juan Manuel Santos, guarantees the safety of the leaders and activists of the Polo Democratico all over the country.

“It is urgent to end the blood bath that has been present in various Colombian regions against members of the PDA. Respect for the opposition to the government talks should lead to respect for life and the real guarantee of their basic rights to members of the main opposition party in the country,” Lopez Obregon said.
