Lawyers, human rights workers urge OAS suspension of extradition

Several lawyer organizations and human rights groups urged the Human
Rights Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) to ask
Colombia to suspend the extradition of paramilitary leaders to the
United States.

According to the organization, the extraditions are “seriously” violating the rights of the victims of those extradited.

The request was made during a hearing advancing the 133th session of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights to be held next week.

The lawyers and human rights workers asked the council to urge Colombia to keep the perpetrators within its jurisdiction, so their sentences could be carried out according to Colombian law.

The organizations claim the extraditions are deminishing the possibility of reparation for the victims.

The Colombian Government defended the extraditions, saying cooperation with the country’s justice system isalso possible from the U.S.
