Lawyers of former DAS director Miguel Maza Marquez Wednesday demanded the immediate release of their client, accused of complicity in the murder of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan in 1989.
According to the defense, the
legal term to try Maza Marquez for the murder of presidential candidate
Luis Carlos Galan expired.
The Human Rights Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office had declared the
murder a crime against humanity, but according to the defense this is unjust and the murder can
not be considered a crime against humanity. Trials dealing with crimes against humanity can not expire.
Marquez’ defense noted that if the Prosecutor General’s Office does not respond to the release request within three days, they will bring the case before a judge to check the legality of the arrest, local media reported.
The prosecution warranted Marquez’ arrest Tuesday afternoon because there is enough evidence to prove the former DAS director was part of the conspiracy to assassinate the popular Liberal leader.
