Lawyers deliberately clog Colombia justice system: Minister

Defense attorneys are to blame for for the congestion of Colombia’s courts, the newly appointed Justice Minister Juan Carlos Esguerra said Monday.

The problem, the justice minister argued, is often created intentionally by lawyers because “they believe that this is done in defense of the interests of their clients,” reported newspaper El Espectador.

To fix the situation, Minister Esguerra plans to go straight to the source. The Ministry of Justice will be working with Colombian law schools to train future lawyers to abstain from the use of judicial congestion as a tool of legal service.

President Juan Manuel Santos appointed Esguerra as the new minister of justice Monday after the split of what used to be the Interior and Justice Ministry.
