Latest blow to FARC in central Colombia

Authorities claim to have struck a second blow at the FARC this year with operations across the Cundinamarca department resulting in two arrested and five dead guerrillas.

According to Caracol Radio, military units of the High Mountain Battalion fought with guerrillas of the FARC’s 51st front, which operates in Cundinamarca. This front is believed to be responsible for kidnappings, extortion and the recruitment of minors.

The authorities claimed to have identified one of the dead guerrillas as “El Negro Arturo,” who is thought to be the front’s second-in-command, responsible for the burning of vehicles in central regions of Colombia as well as being coordinator of security forces in the kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt.

The fifth division of the army is expected to issue an official report regarding additional operations which took place against the guerrillas in the departments of Caqueta, Meta and Guaviare, where authorities allegedly killed 25 guerrillas and captured seven others.
