La Equidad win first leg in Copa Colombia final

by Jonathan Roorda November 13, 2008

La Equidad are close to winning the Copa Colombia after a 1-0 victory
over Once Caldas in the first leg of the tournament’s final.

The only goal of the match was scored two minutes after the break, when Polo enabled Stalin Motta to beat Caldas goalkeeper Julián Mesa for 1-0.

The return leg will be played at the Palogrande stadium of Manizales, home of Once Caldas.

The tournament started eight months ago and included 36 teams. The format was controversial from the start, with teams first having to play ten games in a group phase based on region. As some regions are stronger than others, this obviously led to frustration.

Fans didn’t seem to show much interest either, with most Copa Colombia -also dubbed Copa Postobon- games had extremely low spectator amounts.

Whether the cup is to be organised again next year and in which format, is still unknown.
