La Equidad climb to third in Liga Postobon

by Jonathan Roorda October 11, 2010

Colombia news - Equidad Pereira

La Equidad climb to third place in the Colombian Liga Postobon following a 2-0 win over Deportivo Pereira, while no less than nine goals were scored in Sunday’s Cali classic.

La Equidad hosted Pereira in Bogota and took the lead through Carlos Renteria in the 25th minute. Seconds later, Sherman Cardenas added a second.

Pereira had both Edigson Velazquez and Gustavo Victoria sent off during the match, played at El Techo stadium, while La Equidad finished a man down themselves as result of Hanyer Mosquera’s red card.

The local derby between Deportivo Cali and America de Cali ended in a spectaculary 6-3 win to the home side.

Andres Escobar’s opening goal for Deportivo in the 18th minute was canceled out by Nelson Ramos in the 29th, but Deportivo then walked over their opponents with two goals from Martin Morel and one from Diego Alvarez in the last phase of the first half.

Morel completed his hat-trick two minutes after the break, setting the score to 5-1.

Sergio Galvan pulled one back in the 72nd minute but Jonathan Alvarez made sure to avoid a seemingly impossible comeback by scoring for 6-2 in the 86th. Gabriel Fernandez’ goal for 6-3 in the 88th minute was America’s final attempt at saving some of their pride.

Cucuta Deportivo remain in eighth place following a 2-0 win over Boyaca Chico. The goals came from Diego Peralta in the first half and Huberto Botello in the second.

In Sunday’s remaining games, reigning champions Junior drew 1-1 with Atletico Huila, who dropped to fifth place at four points from leaders Santa Fe, while Atletico Nacional earned a 2-1 win over Cortulua.

Currently on course for a spot in the next round are Santa Fe, Tolima, La Equidad, Once Caldas, Huila, Quindio, Nacional and Cucuta.
