Key parties reach coalition agreement

After lengthy negotiations, Colombian political parties Partido de la U, the Liberals, and the Conservatives reached an agreement on the composition of their incoming government coalition.

From July 20, when Colombia’s new Congress convenes for the first time, the Conservatives will chair the House of Representatives for the first year and then will hold the presidency of the Senate in the second year of the four year term.

The Liberals will chair the House of Representatives in the second year and will assume the Senate presidency in the fourth year.

Partido de la U, the party of President-elect Juan Manuel Santos, has also submitted a proposal for the configuration of Congress commissions. Of the 28 commissions scheduled for the four year term, Partido de la U will head ten, the Liberals seven, and the Conservatives seven, while political party Cambio Radical will head four.
