Kevin Whittaker nominated US ambassador to Colombia

US President Barack Obama on Thursday formally nominated Kevin Whittaker as the country’s new ambassador to Colombia. Before the appointment is official however, Whittaker must be confirmed by the Foreign Relations committee of the US.

Whittaker has held various positions within the state department and has been in command of various diplomatic missions in Central America and Venezuela, so is regarded a key figure in the implementation of US diplomacy in the region.

Whittaker’s current post is Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South America.

His predecessor, Michael McKinley, is to be sent to Afghanistan after three years of work in Colombia.
