Judge sinks deal with DAS wiretap witnesses

A judge ruled Friday against a prosecution deal that allowed key players in the illegal spying on the Supreme Court to testify against their superiors and in return be excluded from prosecution.

According to the ruling, former investigator Alba Luz Florez and her superior Martha Inez Leal must continue to be criminally investigated for their role in the illegal wiretapping of the Supreme Court.

The Prosecutor General’s Office had made them capital witnesses to allow the two to open the books about who in the DAS command were involved in the illegal wiretapping activities of the intelligence services that also affected journalists, politicians and human rights organizations.

The former officials’ defense attorneys and the Prosecutor General’s Office said they will appeal the decision.
