Jackson Martinez voted player of the year

Striker Jackson Martinez of Independiente Medellin has been voted football player of the year in Colombia following a ballot by local journalists.

Martinez set a season record with 18 goals in 23 matches.

He was followed in the vote by midfielder Giovanni Hernandez of Atletico Junior de Barranquilla and goalkeeper Edigson Velasquez of Deportivo Pereira. Omar Perez, an Argentine midfielder with Bogota club Santa Fe, was next in the poll by the newspaper El Tiempo de Bogota.

Martinez scored two goals in Independiente’s 3-2 aggregate victory over Deportivo Pereira for the season championship. (AP)
