Israeli mercenary extricated from conviction in Colombia

The penalty handed down to convicted Israeli mercenary has officially expired, local media reported Wednesday.

According to media reports, a judge representing the Criminal Chamber of the Superior Tribunal of Manizales officially announced that the sentence for Yair Klein is no longer valid. Consequently, Klein is now officially free to enter the country .

Colombian prosecutors accused Yair Klein of training and arming paramilitary groups in the 1980s. Klein was initially convicted in 1999 and sentenced to 14 years. However, an appeal from his lawyers in 2001 secured a reduced sentence of only 10 years and 8 months.
