Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Relations opened a preliminary investigation on Elsa Gladys, Colombian Consul in New York City, for suspected biased political participation.

The investigation was opened after evidence on social networking sites came to light showing that the public official was proselytizing for specific candidates running for Colombia’s congress in upcoming March 9 elections.

Consulates, such as the large hub located in Manhattan, are responsible for collecting votes from Colombian citizens currently living in the exterior of the country, and should be unbiased collectors.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations will now work to verify if these accusations–that include photos, emails, conversations between other actors, etc according to El Pais newspaper– are true.

There are nine Colombian consulates in various cities (including San Juan, Puerto Rico) across the United States and the primary embassy is in Washington DC.
