International human rights commission ‘hopeful’ about Colombia peace talks

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is hopeful that peace talks between the Colombian government and Colombia’s largest rebel group FARC will continue to progress positively, reported news agency Colprensa Tuesday.

Following a meeting with representatives of Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IACHR president Jose de Jesus Orozco said the organization is “hopeful of the recently renewed peace dialogue that the government has reinitiated [with the FARC] and expects that it will progress positively.”

The IACHR arrived in Colombia on Monday under invitation by the government of President Juan Manuel Santos to assess the state of human rights in Colombia. The Colombian government hopes that the five day visit by the IACHR will result in the country’s removal from the organisation’s human rights blacklist.
