Renowned experts in international law are set to gather in Cartagena de Los Indios in October to hold workshops on military conduct.

The Senior Workshop on International Rules Governing Military Operations (SWIRMO) will be led by serving senior military experts. The event director Raoul Forst said in an interview with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) that bringing together participants with diverse training will allow participants to share experiences worldwide. He added: “The main objective is to learn from each other how to better respect the law.”

An invitation to the conference says that there will be interpreters to translate speeches into English, French, Russian and Spanish.

This year’s SWIRMO is the first to be held in the Americas. The first four conferences (2007 – 2010) were held in Europe, SWIRMO 2011 was held in South Africa and last year’s took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Military officials present from 60 countries will speak at the forum. Forster said in his interview with ICRC: “The panelists and speakers are experts in workshops and are senior officials with vast experience in teaching law.”
